Okay, got some more work done on it today. I started working on the Mech Bay base.

Using razor knife blades and a metal ruler to make perfectly straight cuts:

Nice square IO shield hole:

Drew blood, to be expected when playing with razor blades. Here I am sporting a “Handy Manny” band-aid, somewhat appropriate. Notice the center brace made out of 1/2″ triple-corrugated cardboard, with a hexagon hole cut for cable routing.

First mock-up of the base. Once it’s glued, it will be very strong! The DVD-Rom is flush with the right side, so far everything looks like it will fit nicely.

Here’s a quick top platform piece I made to make a template. The finished one will be thicker. There’s the cut-out for the cards on the left, there will be a scaffolding tower over that area about the same height as the mech. It’ll require a lot of detail cutting, but it won’t hold any weight, so I can use fairly thin board for that. I’ve also got some toilet paper rolls to make tanks out of, not sure exactly where they’ll go yet.

Getting closer!
