Being Grounded In A Subversive World

sub•vert (səb-vûrtˈ)

• v. To destroy completely; ruin: “schemes to subvert the liberties of a great community” (Alexander Hamilton).
• v. To undermine the character, morals, or allegiance of; corrupt.
• v. To overthrow completely.

Whether we like it or not, we live in a world filled with subversion. Everywhere we go, people want to undermine common sense in order to warp reality to fit their own ends.

Specifically, I’m talking about definition #2: “To undermine the character, morals, or allegiance of; corrupt.”

You have to understand that in order for morals and character to be undermined, there have to be morals and character there to begin with. You can’t subvert or corrupt something that doesn’t exist.

And really, the story of subverting what is good and true goes all the way back to the Garden of Eden. Satan never has been capable of creating anything; he can only twist and warp and corrupt what is already there. We see, time and time again, that those who can’t achieve tend to stoop to bringing everyone else down to their level to make them feel better about themselves.

We, as people who value truth, wisdom, and love, understand that all three must go hand-in-hand.  You can have the most soft-hearted immigration policy, the most sincere desire to save the environment, or the biggest ideas for “equality.” But as I recently pointed out, Americans are gullible.

So what do we do, as people who value God’s wisdom, in a world that is actively trying to destroy it? How do we cope with the death spiral that modern “culture” has initiated?

“Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell—and great was its fall.”

When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

Don’t let the winds and storms of culture, fads, junk science, or pop psychology throw you for a loop. They will try to get you to buy into their drama and hype. They will pressure you with emotional rhetoric, they will call you names, they will mock you and ridicule you for valuing life and love and freedom. They will twist your words and throw strawman arguments at you until you just want to quit.

I urge you, readers, to place your foundation on the Rock of Jesus Christ- the living embodiment of God’s love.

Let the winds blow. We shall not be moved.
